There is kind of a meta streak to the film, song and dance numbers take place within both the natural narrative of the film but the characters also give performances as part of the film-within-a-film. The songs themselves are all fantastic, especially the titular 'Singin' in the Rain', which in my opinion is one of the most joyous scenes in cinema.So Singin' in the Rain was going back a mere 25 years to poke fun at the past and pull humor from the movie industry's shortcomings. Putting things in perspective, that would be like if a director in 2015 made a loving, yet irreverent comedy skewering the movie industry in 1990. Most of the stars of 1990 are still around today.
