Internalized heterosexism

A far-too-common manifestation of the prescriptive nature of heteronormativity is prejudice based on sexual orientation (i.e., homonegativity or heterosexism; e.g., against bisexual, lesbian, and gay individuals) and gender identity (i.e., transnegativity; e.g., against trans women, trans men, and non-binary individuals).

Jul 1, 2008 · This article focuses on implications of empirical research on the construct of internalized heterosexism (IH) in lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals. First, suggestions for practice with LGB clients are provided using the framework proposed by Goodman et al. for social justice work at micro, meso, and macro levels. Internalized heterosexism is a manifestation of internalized sexism that primarily affects sexual minority populations (composed of people who identify lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other), however, it can also affect heterosexual populations by dictating how they interact with and relate to non-heterosexual peoples.
