Visual world paradigm

We describe the key features of the visual world paradigm and review the main research areas where it has been used. In our discussion we highlight that the paradigm provides information about the way language users integrate linguistic information with information derived from the visual environmen …

A common critique of the Visual World Paradigm (VWP) in psycholinguistic studies is that what is designed as a measure of language processes is meaningfully altered by the visual context of the task. This is crucial, particularly in studies of spoken word recognition, where the displayed images are usually seen as just a part of the measure and ... We briefly review this literature and discuss the implications for task-based variants of the visual world paradigm. We argue that the results and their likely interpretation may profoundly affect the "linking hypothesis" between language processing and the location and timing of fixations in task-based visual world studies. The visual world paradigm involves tracking eye movements to objects on a computer screen while participants hear a sentence, with the assumption that there is a close link between eye movements and language processes (Huettig, Rommers & Meyer, Reference Huettig, Rommers and Meyer 2011). The visual world paradigm is thus particularly …

But there is another popular use of eye …Here we present a visual-world paradigm study in a three-dimensional (3-D) immersive virtual reality environment. Despite significant changes in the stimulus materials and the different mode of stimulus presentation, language-mediated anticipatory eye movements were still observed. The experimental paradigm introduced by Cooper and Tanenhaus and colleagues is known as the visual world paradigm (VWP, for an extensive review, see Huettig et al. 2011). Participants listen to a spoken utterance and simultaneously look at a visual scene containing various objects while their eye movements are monitored.

We used the visual-world paradigm to examine children's use of syntactic and non-syntactic information to resolve syntactic ambiguity by extending our understanding of number features as a cue for interpretation to which-subject and which-object questions. We compared children's and adults’ eye-movements to understand how this information ...A common critique of the Visual World Paradigm (VWP) in psycholinguistic studies is that what is designed as a measure of language processes is meaningfully altered by the visual context of the task. Three experiments tracked participants’ eye-movements to examine the time course of comprehension of the dual meaning of counterfactuals, such as “if there had been oranges then there would have been pears.” Participants listened to conditionals while looking at images in the visual world paradigm, including an image of oranges and pears that …1 Introduction The Visual World Paradigm [VWP, 1] is an eye-tracking method used to study real-time spoken language processing [see 2 for overview]. VWP data require significant preprocessing prior to analysis, and the nonlinear, time-series nature of the data presents challenges for data analysis.

Using the visual world eye-tracking paradigm, we tested 34 Mandarin-speaking adults and 99 Mandarin-speaking children (35 three-year-olds, 32 four-year-olds and 32 five-year-olds).Method: A total of 30 monolingual adults were tested using a novel written word version of the visual world paradigm (VWP). We compared activation of phonological anadromes (words that are matched for sounds but not letters, e.g., JAB-BADGE) and orthographic anadromes (words that are matched for letters but not sounds, e.g., LEG …
