Generally you want 80% with Spinal Mount/Artillery/Artillery segments, and 20% with Spinal Mount/Carrier/Artillery segments. I always use auto-generated ship designs (because the micromanagement of ship design isn't fun for me) and essentially evaluate my chances of winning a battle as a numbers game of fleet power.
