Also known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ( IDEA ). This federal law amended and expanded The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975. The act uses “people-first” language, replacing “handicapped children” with “individuals with disabilities” and the definition of those with disabilities was expanded. It was put in place to ensure that public schools serve the educational needs of students with disabilities by providing them with special education services.
