Plumb axe head identification
Sep 6, 2011 · Feb 2, 2005. Messages. 19,988. Sep 6, 2011. #1. I picked up a Plumb axe for a presumably great price at an antique shop over the weekend. Head is in great shape, razor sharp. Could use a new handle, but it doesn't need one right away. Only markings I can see on the head are. One of the pages that Steve Tall linked to from 1943. Notice that the small tools have embossed handles, but the axe has a label. Notice also that the heads of the tools are stamped 'Plumb Victory". This would mean that the Plumb tools that are marked "Plumb Victory" are the WWII era tools, and that the axe above might be from post WWII.

I've always called them carpenter's hand axes, they are flat on one side with the bevel on the other, like a one handed small broad axe. Hatchet sized. Bevel is on the right side, flat on the left side. Mar 23, 2018 · Mar 23, 2018. #11. Well, I've learned from the Blade Forum that Mike McRea mentioned that the axe "3 2" marking means the head is 3&1/2 lbs. I'll weigh the whole thing at some point. Folks at the Blade Forum seem to think there's nothing wrong with the head or heat treatment, so I'll try to sharpen it up.
