When you pick up one of the shards without start the quest first it bugs out. 1.Find a copy of the book. 2.Drop the "Crystal Shard" from you inventory. It isn't quest locked so you can drop it. 3. Read the book. Quest will start and mark the map. 4. Pick up crystal shard will now be called "Aetherium Shard" and quest lock into your inventory.Or you can simply head directly for the location Arkngthamz, which is South of Markarth in the Reach. both are Dwemer Ruins so be prepared. The Reward is rather nice too and it is interesting to deal more with Dwemer lore. Doing this quest should be rather fun for you.
