An eon is the largest (formal) geochronologic time unit and is the equivalent of a chronostratigraphic eonothem. As of October 2022 there are four formally defined eons/eonothems: the Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic and Phanerozoic. An era is the second largest geochronologic time unit and is the equivalent of a chronostratigraphic erathem.
