Though written Chinese is comprised of characters, the People's Republic of China has developed an official romanization system, called pinyin, for transcribing Chinese and teaching language basics. Pinyin uses the standard Roman alphabet as a tool for learning Chinese pronunciation, and all words written in pinyin are pronounced phonetically.
